Saquon Barkley, Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney and Kyle Rudolph were all on the field Tuesday as the Giants cut down their roster and held practice.
It is not exactly what you think, though.
This was a slowly paced session filled with work on specific situations that come up in games. There was no heavy lifting. Still, it was encouraging for the Giants to see their playmakers participating.
Darius Slayton, who came out of the preseason finale with foot and ankle issues, was also on the field. The only player who did not work at all was tight end Evan Engram, who has a calf injury that could keep him out of the Sept. 12 season opener.
“I really couldn’t give you an answer to that right now,’’ coach Joe Judge said of Engram’s availability. “It’s very much a gray area right now in terms of where he’s going to be going. I’ll kind of give him a couple more days, see where he’s at, see how he progresses, see if we move around a little bit, we’ll kind of make a decision from there.’’
Saquon Barkley Bill KostrounJudge said no decision will be made on Barkley until next week, when the Giants begin practicing specifically for the Broncos. There are practices Wednesday and Thursday before the players get three consecutive days off.
The 53-man roster is far from finished, as there will be players added and others removed. At this point, receivers C.J. Board, Dante Pettis and John Ross are all on the team, as are cornerback Sam Beal and rookie running back Gary Brightwell.
To get to the 53-player limit, the Giants released these players: RB Corey Clement; OL Chad Slade, OL Jonotthan Harrison, OL Kenny Wiggins, LB Ifeadi Odenigbo, LB Ryan Anderson, DL Willie Henry and long snapper Casey Kreiter. The move with Kreiter is procedural — he will be re-signed shortly.
The Giants waived the following players: QB Brian Lewerke, WR David Sills, WR Damion Willis, WR Matt Cole, TE Nakia Griffin-Stewart, TE Jake Hausmann, RB Sandro Platzgummer, OL Jackson Barton, OL Jake Burton, OL Brett Heggie, DL David Moa, DL Elijah Qualls, LB Devante Downs, LB Niko Lalos, DB Madre Harper, DB Chris Johnson and DB Jordyn Peters.
Rookie CB Aaron Robinson, the third-round pick, remains on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he must miss the first six games. OL Ted Larsen, WR Alex Bachman and WR Austin Mack were placed on injured reserve.
“This is not an easy day for any coach or player in the building,’’ Judge said. “There’s a lot of guys that sacrifice a lot for you. … You walk in there and look at empty chairs, that’s not easy for any coach or player. I think it’s natural to come into work today with a little bit of a deflated mood. It’s our job and responsibility to get back up and get on the field and prepare going forward. It’s our job and responsibility to get back up and get on the field and prepare going forward.’’
