T.J. Jones did plenty of good things on the practice field during training camp and in the preseason games this summer. The 27-year-old wide receiver certainly did not look out of place wearing a Giants uniform and developed a nice chemistry with rookie quarterback Daniel Jones.
Looks can be deceiving this time of year, and Jones was one of the players cut on Saturday as the Giants began the process of paring their roster to the 53-player limit by 4 p.m.
Jones arrived with 64 career receptions for 814 yards and four touchdowns from his four years with the Lions and led the Giants this preseason with 12 catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
Jones took to Twitter to say goodbye to the Giants, posting, “Left it all out there for 5 weeks. No regrets and walking away healthy with my head held high knowing this isnt the finale. Thankful for the opportunity no doubt. Excited for what comes next!’’
Even with Golden Tate suspended for the first four games and the season-ending knee injury to Corey Coleman early in camp, the receiver room was too crowded to include Jones. It looks as if the Giants will go with Sterling Shepard, Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler, Russell Shepard and most likely rookie Darius Slayton. Last year, the Giants kept just five receivers to start the season and might do so again.
In other cuts, the Giants parted ways with linebackers Avery Moss, Jake Carlock, Terrence Fede, Joey Alfieri and Josiah Tauaefa. Moss was a 2017 fifth-round pick out of Youngstown State, selected by the previous front-office regime and never developed into the pass-rusher the Giants hoped he might be. Moss played in 11 games as a rookie and spent the entire 2018 season on the practice squad.
Other cuts on the offensive line: Paul Adams, Evan Brown and James O’Hagan. Long snapper Taybor Pepper was cut, meaning Zak Deossie returns for a 13th season. He is the longest-tenured Giants player, after Eli Manning, who enters his 16th year with the team.
