Some Giants players, general manager Joe Schoen and play-by-play announcer Bob Papa were locked down inside the Mall of America during a shooting on Friday night that left a 19-year-old dead.

No players were believed to be near the violence at the massive Bloomington, Minnesota, shopping complex, but a team spokesman confirmed some were in the mall at the time of the shooting.

“Safely out of mall and back at hotel,” Papa tweeted at 10:27 p.m. Friday. “Prayers to victim.”

About an hour earlier the shaken announcer had tweeted, “Scary here @mallofamerica. Shooting in mall. On lockdown at #TwinCitiesGrill. Two gunmen at least one victim.”

A 19-year-old man was killed during the incident, police said, and the mall was locked down for more than an hour. The mall reopened Saturday, but the Nordstrom department store where the shooting took place remained shuttered.

The incident was fueled by an altercation between two groups of young men, Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges said during a press conference late Friday. Between five and nine people were involved, he said, and they ran out of the mall immediately after the 7:50 p.m. shooting. The entire incident lasted about 30 seconds, Hodges said.

The Giants, in Minnesota to play the Vikings on Saturday, are staying in a hotel adjacent to the nation’s largest mall.

A Bloomington officer who was nearby heard the shots and arrived to find the victim on the ground, Hodges said.

“We had 16 officers working today in the mall. Sixteen cops,” Hodges said. “And they still decide to do this. I’m at a loss.”

No arrests had been made by late Friday.

“Here we are before Christmas, and they’re going to have to bury a loved one,” Hodges said.

An innocent bystander’s coat sleeve was grazed by a stray bullet, but the person was uninjured, Hodges said.

When the incident occurred, Jerry Meade, the Giants’ vice president of security and the team’s security group sent out an alert to let people know there was an incident in the mall and to stay in the hotel or shelter in place. For those already in the mall, they were asked to text Meade their location so those individuals could be found and retrieved by Giants security personnel, with assistance from the Bloomington Police Department, once it was safe to do so.

All members of the Giants travel party were accounted for and returned to the hotel within about 20 minutes of being alerted about the incident.

Police did not immediately release the name of the victim, but Hodges and Bloomington Mayor Tim Busse met with members of the victim’s family, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported, adding the mall last saw gunfire in August.

Hodges said detectives are in the process of identifying suspects and vowed that “we’re going to catch these people. And we’re going to lock them up”
