Alex Tanney, who spent most of the past three seasons as a Giants backup quarterback, is retiring after nine years in the NFL, having thrown only 15 passes in two games.

Tanney, 33, is best known for replacing Eli Manning on Dec. 15, 2019 when Manning was taken out in the fourth quarter of a victory over the Dolphins in what was the final start and appearance of Manning’s 16-year career.

The Giants replaced Tanney with Colt McCoy in 2020, but Tanney was signed to the practice squad for the final month of the season.

Tanney began his NFL career with the Chiefs in 2012 after going undrafted out of Division III Monmouth College in Illinois. He also spent time with the Cowboys, Browns, Buccaneers, Titans, Bills and Colts. His lone NFL touchdown pass came with the Titans on Jan. 3, 2016.
