Eric Gray is ready for a more black-and-white role, if that’s what the Giants have in mind.
After talking with coaches and starting running back Saquon Barkley, the third-string rookie is hopeful to be more involved in the offense over the final three games of the season.
He has 13 carries (12 against the Dolphins) on 45 offensive snaps this season but just saw a bump to 11 snaps in last week’s blowout loss.
“Just to get some more experience going into next year,” Gray told The Post. “Being in there for live reps is definitely important because there are some things you can’t simulate. Some things are just game-like. You can’t watch it, you can’t do it in practice. It’s different.”
The ongoing joke in the running back meeting room is the fifth-round pick’s nickname.
“They love to say, ‘Get in there, Fresh Legs,’” Gray said. “I want to be able to be a change-of-pace. My game my whole life has been making people miss, making sharp cuts and being able to get downhill when I need to. I’m just being myself and trying to help the team any way I can.”
Giants running back Eric Gray (20) gains yards during a rush against the Saints on Dec. 17, 2023. Corey Sipkin for the NY PostBarkley, who is 203 yards shy of his fourth 1,000-yard rushing season, expressed his faith in Gray’s ability earlier this week and said “you will see a little bit more of him, too.”
“Saquon, being a vet, was saying, ‘Be ready because you are going to be in there more later in the season to get that experience,’” Gray said. “That’s very impactful. He’s playing for his contract, he’s playing for a lot, and for him to be able to step outside the game and say, ‘I’ve been in those shoes, so let me help the rookie as well’ is a testament to him and his character.”
Gray’s season was marred when he was forced into a punt-return role and mishandled three in the first seven games. He was replaced at the same time that he went on injured reserve for four games.
“When you are a competitor, you want to play — no matter what level you are at,” Gray said. “But having to sit back and learn has been good. I’m very well-versed in the playbook.”
The Giants have cut into Barkley’s third-down snaps in recent weeks, which suggests an emerging window for Gray.
Head coach Brian Daboll didn’t tip his hand.
“Saquon will be in there as long as he can be there,” Daboll said, “and we’ll see where the other guys go.”
Barkley and second-stringer Matt Breida are both free agents after the season. Is Gray a building block? Too soon to tell.
Giants running back Eric Gray speaks to reporters on Dec. 13, 2023. Robert Sabo for the NY Post“I have a ton to play for,” Gray said. “I want to prove myself, have fun and do what I know I can do.”
The Giants could be short at defensive tackle Monday against the Eagles, with Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee) out and Dexter Lawrence (hamstring) and A’Shawn Robinson (back) listed as questionable on the final injury report. Lawrence indicated that he expects to play after practice, and Daboll is hopeful about Robinson’s availability.
TE Lawrence Cager (groin) and RB Gary Brightwell (hamstring) also are questionable. RT Evan Neal (ankle) is out. P Jamie Gillan (left groin) was limited in practice.
K Cade York “tweaked his quad” during practice, Daboll said, and joined Randy Bullock as the second Giants’ kicker added to injured reserve this week.
Mason Crosby practiced Saturday for the first time. He is the all-time leading scorer in Packers history (1,918 points) but hasn’t kicked in a game this season.
