SANTA CLARA, Calif. – It figures that the Giants need all hands on deck if they are to have any shot at knocking off the powerhouse 49ers but that will not be the case Thursday night at Levi’s Stadium.

Running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) and left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) both have been ruled out for the game, according to the injury report released Wednesday.

These losses on offense — both highly significant — come as no surprise.

Barkley suffered a sprained right ankle with 1:12 remaining in last Sunday’s wild 31-28 comeback victory over the Cardinals in Glendale, Ariz.

The ankle swelled up and Barkley needed help getting off the field. It was diagnosed as a low-ankle sprain.

Despite coach Brian Daboll saying Tuesday that Barkley was feeling much better, there was no way he was going to be able to play on that ankle four days after hurting it.

If he is able to miss only one game and return for the Oct. 2 “Monday Night Football’’ home meeting with the Seahawks, the Giants will consider themselves fortunate.

Thomas strained his hamstring while pursuing the ball on a blocked field goal in the season-opening loss to the Cowboys. He was able to finish that game but did not play in Arizona.

He will miss another week and, like Barkley, hopes to return to face the Seahawks.

Veteran Matt Breida is expected to start in place of Barkley, with third-year back Gary Brightwell and rookie Eric Gray also in line to get some action.

Second-year Josh Ezeudu made his first NFL start last week at left tackle and is expected to do so again, in place of Thomas.

Ben Bredeson, the starting left guard, was also ruled out for the game with the 49ers, as he remains in the concussion protocol.

Mark Glowinski, benched last week at right guard in favor of Marcus McKethan (making his first NFL start) was reinstated into the lineup last week when Bredeson went out and will likely start at left guard.
