Barry Cofield just notched another upset victory.
The former Giants defensive lineman, who was part of the historic Super Bowl win over the 18-0 New England Patriots, has secured a generous plea agreement, which will allow him to avoid a prison sentence after being arrested on charges of possession of heroin, fleeing and eluding and aggravated assault on a police officer, according to TMZ Sports. Cofield was facing as much as five years behind bars.
During the incident in Florida last July, Cofield, 34, was found passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle, and he rammed a police car during an ensuing pursuit. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound lineman only exited his car when a deputy smashed one of Cofield’s windows, having ignored several requests to get out. Heroin was then found in the vehicle, and a sobriety test was refused by Cofield, who smelled of alcohol.
Cofield pleaded no contest to charges of heroin possession and DUI causing damage or injury, and he could have the former charge dropped if he completes a drug court program. Should he avoid any other legal issues, Cofield would only face 12 months probation, 50 hours of community service, a $500 fine, DUI school, a victim awareness panel, a six-month suspension of his driver’s license, a 10-day vehicle impound, random drug testing and other fines.
Cofield played 10 seasons in the NFL, last suiting up with the Giants in 2015.
