A day after sitting and meeting with former Packers coach Mike McCarthy, the Giants go into the weekend continuing their search for their next head coach.
The auditions continue, with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink’’ Martindale meeting with the Giants on Saturday. Josh McDaniels, the Patriots’ offensive coordinator, is on the Giants’ candidate list and has set aside Jan. 10 as the day for any interested teams to set up an interview. The Giants also want to speak next week with Joe Judge, the Patriots’ special teams coordinator.
Baylor coach Matt Rhule, a serious candidate for the Giants, is currently vacationing with his family in Mexico. A date for an interview has not yet been scheduled, but figures to be on the docket this coming week.
Kris Richard, the Cowboys’ defensive passing game coordinator, met with the Giants on Thursday to kick off the interview process.
McCarthy and Rhule, The Post has reported, are to be considered the two candidates with the best chance to ultimately win the prize. The interview process, though, could reconfigure the pecking order. Bieniemy, in particular, figures to impress the Giants with his natural leadership skills and comes with the full endorsement of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who has sprouted a most impressive coaching tree. Ten former Reid assistants — including recently-fired Pat Shurmur — went on to become NFL head coaches, and two of them, John Harbaugh and Doug Pederson, won Super Bowls.
