The Giants made no moves with their coaching staff yesterday, but early next week they are expected to call a news conference to announce the hiring of Jerry Reese as their new general manager.

Reese would replace Ernie Accorsi, who is retiring after serving as GM since 1998. Reese, 42, completed his fourth season as the Giants’ director of player personnel.

In addition to interviewing Reese and three other in-house candidates, Giants ownership also spoke with Charley Casserly, the former GM in Washington and Houston. The Giants received permission from the Patriots to speak with Scott Pioli, but he declined an interview request.

Promoting Reese would be a strong statement by ownership that it is confident with the way the scouting system operates and does not feel any major changes are required.

The other strong in-house candidate, Chris Mara, likely will be given expanded scouting and player-personnel responsibilities. In his current role, Mara, as vice president of evaluation, has strong influence in the decision-making process.

Also next week, the Giants will officially announce the promotion of Kevin Gilbride to offensive coordinator. Gilbride, the quarterbacks coach the past three seasons, took over the play-calling for the final two games after Tom Coughlin demoted John Hufnagel, who is no longer with the team.
