Joe Schoen was the assistant general manager in Buffalo when the Bills made Boogie Basham, an outside linebacker out of Wake Forest, a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Schoen currently runs the show as the Giants’ general manager, and Tuesday he dipped into his scouting roots, acquiring Basham from the Bills to add depth to the defensive line.
The Giants got Basham and a 2025 seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-rounder.
Schoen certainly knows what he needs to about Basham, having studied him in the draft process and spending the 2021 season with him in Buffalo.
Basham, 25, was going to get cut by the Bills, and it is unlikely he would have been available to the Giants for a waiver claim. Thus, Schoen was proactive in adding a player with potential who has not blossomed in his first two NFL seasons.

He has 37 total tackles in 23 career games — zero starts.

Last season, the Giants claimed wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins off waivers from the Bills and he was able to make an almost immediate impact. The Giants ran the same offensive system — head coach Brian Daboll’s system — that Hodgins was familiar with in Buffalo.
That is not the case with Basham and the new defense he moves into with the Giants.
“This is acquiring another player from a different roster,’’ said Daboll, who is also familiar with Basham from their 2021 season together in Buffalo. “We know the player a little bit, the person and stuff like that, but he’s got to learn a whole new defensive scheme.’’
With good size — 6-foot-3, 281 pounds — and the skill set to put pressure on the quarterback, Basham is the sort of player Martindale is often able to utilize.
Last week, Schoen sent a seventh-round pick to the Cardinals in exchange for Isaiah Simmons, a versatile inside linebacker who was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2020 draft. Simmons made his preseason debut for the Giants on Saturday night in a loss to the Jets, one day after arriving.

There were no shockers among the Giants’ cuts Tuesday, as they trimmed their roster to the league-mandated 53-player limit.
Outside linebacker Oshane Ximines, a 2019 third-round draft pick of the previous regime, was waived.

Linebacker Darrian Beavers, a sixth-round pick in 2022, was also cut.
Wide receiver David Sills, a camp star last summer who caught 11 passes in nine games last season, was also waived, as the competition at the wide receiver position was strong.
The entire seven-man 2023 draft class made the initial 53-man roster.
The other players waived: QB Tommy DeVito, RB Jashaun Corbin, WR Kalil Pimpleton, TE Ryan Jones, T Tyre Phillips, DT Ryder Anderson, DT Kobe Smith, DE Habakkuk Baldonado, LB Tomon Fox, LB Ray Wilborn, LB Dyontae Johnson, CB Gemon Green, S Alex Cook and long snapper Cameron Lyons.
Players who had their contracts terminated, in addition to Sills: WR Jamison Crowder, WR Cole Beasley, CB Amani Oruwariye and C Sean Harlow.
TE Tommy Sweeney was placed on the reserve/non-football list. CB Aaron Robinson was moved from active/PUP to reserve/PUP and will miss at least the first four games of the season.
CB Darnay Holmes, entering his fourth season with the Giants, accepted a pay cut in order to stay on the roster. Holmes played 59 percent of the snaps on defense in 2022 as the nickel corner.
That spot, for now, will be manned by Adoree’ Jackson, moving inside from the perimeter to accommodate rookie Tre Hawkins, who won a starting job after an impressive training camp.
“Good team player, he’ll be productive in whatever role we ask him to be,’’ Daboll said.
Not practicing Tuesday: RB Gary Brightwell, LB Cam Brown, CB Cor’Dale Flott, DB Nick McCloud, S Gervarrius Owens and S Bobby McCain.
All six of those injured players made the initial 53-man roster.
