Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said Thursday he is very unhappy with the way he has played this season.
“I’m not a very good player right now,” Tuck said as the team prepares to face the Eagles on Sunday. “It’s frustrating because I do look at myself on film and I don’t like what I see. It’s not the effort. I feel like I’m putting forth the effort, but it’s just some things are not allowing me to play my style of football.”
Tuck has been bothered by neck and groin injuries, missing four games, but would not use that as an excuse for his below-normal production of 10 tackles and two sacks. Last season, he had 99 tackles and 11 1/2 sacks.
“I guess when I say it, it comes from stats, I guess,” Tuck said. “That’s the selfish part of being the athlete, but the thing that keeps me going and I’m happy about is we’re playing well. Regardless of what I do personally, we keep winning, I’m fine.”
Tuck suffered a stringer in the preseason against the Jets and it has not totally healed.
“It’s not that I’m afraid to do things. It’s just some things I can’t do,” Tuck said. “It won’t allow me to do it.”
Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell supports Tuck.
“Has he been able to jump back on the bicycle and ride as fast as we want him to ride? No, but I think it is coming,” Fewell said. “He is always more critical of himself than any (of) us. He wants to improve and get better and he will get better. It takes time.”
