Come on down, Tommy DeVito.
You’re the next contestant on “Play Quarterback for The Giants This Week.”
The fan favorite DeVito is expected to start Sunday against the Ravens because Drew Lock (heel/elbow) is in a walking boot and not expected on the practice field until Friday at the earliest, head coach Brian Daboll said.
Giants quarterback Drew Lock is tackled during a game against the Saints on Dec. 8, 2024. Charles Wenzelberg/New York PostSo, DeVito, who started the first game of the post-Daniel Jones Era in a loss to the Buccaneers on Nov. 24, is back in the saddle with an opportunity that he wasn’t certain would come again this season.
“Obviously, it’s been a little bit of a crazy situation this whole year with everything that’s gone on,” DeVito said after Wednesday’s practice. “So, there’s almost no surprises at this point. You just have to stay ready.”
Since their last touchdown pass (Jones to Theo Johnson) on Nov. 3, the Giants have made these quarterback moves: Benched Jones, cut Jones, promoted the third-stringer DeVito ahead of the second-stringer Lock as the new starter, started Lock over an injured DeVito, started Lock over a healthy DeVito, and now named DeVito the starter over an injured Lock.
“It’s just a roller coaster,” DeVito said. “But it’s part of the process, part of the journey. I’m just staying even-keeled through it all and continuing to work.”
DeVito injured his right forearm against the Buccaneers — when he took four sacks and led one scoring drive — but said he is “100 percent” healthy now.
He played one snap in a specialty package last week, which drew a big cheer from the home crowd, which wants to see the North Jersey native.
Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito after a loss to the Saints on Dec. 8, 2024. Charles Wenzelberg/New York PostLock was sacked twice and took 13 quarterback hits against the Saints but finished the game. He was in obvious pain afterwards.
So, the challenge falls to DeVito to help the 16.5-point underdogs avoid a franchise record-tying ninth straight loss.
“You’re just worrying about getting in that win column,” DeVito said. “You can’t worry about the past too much.”
DeVito has not thrown an interception in his past six starts, dating back to last year as an undrafted rookie who became a viral sensation nicknamed “Tommy Cutlets.”
Daboll said it is too soon to know if Lock or Tim Boyle — on an elevation from the practice squad — will back up DeVito.
The season is over for rookie second-round draft pick Tyler Nubin — one of the few bright spots with a team-leading 98 tackles — after he suffered an ankle injury last game.
He was placed on injured reserve, meaning he is out at least four games (and only four remain).
Six players did not practice: Lock (heel/elbow), RT Evan Neal (hip/ankle), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (neck/shoulder), LB Bobby Okereke(back), CB Dru Phillips(shoulder) and RG Jon Runyan Jr. (ankle).
Eleven were limited in practice: CB Deonte Banks(ribs), S Dane Belton(knee), LTJermaine Eluemunor (quad), OT Josh Ezeudu(knee), CB Cor’Dale Flott (quad), WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton(shoulder), CB Art Green(quad), OT Chris Hubbard(knee), WR Malik Nabers(hip), DT Jordon Riley(knee), C Austin Schlottmann(fibula) and LB Dyontae Johnson(ankle).
The Giants signed CB Divaad Wilsonto their active roster off of the Cardinals practice squad and added OT Jalen McKenzieto their practice squad.
