The first candidate to replace Dave Gettleman as Giants general manager has emerged.

The Giants submitted an interview request for Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen, who was the first major front-office hire of Brandon Beane when he arrived as general manager in 2017. Schoen was the Dolphins director of player personnel from 2014-17 – working under former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum – after an internal promotion from assistant director of college scouting.

Schoen’s scouting-heavy background fits the traditional mold of a Giants general manager.

An interesting twist is that Schoen comes off of Beane’s tree and Beane is a branch of Gettleman’s tree after working as his right-hand advisor with the Panthers. Schoen and Gettleman never worked together.

While Gettleman’s four-year tenure with the Giants was a disaster (19-46 record) before his forced retirement Monday, Beane has turned the Bills into a Super Bowl contender after they failed to win a playoff game from 1995 through last season.

The Giants have also reportedly requested interviews with the Chiefs’ executive director for player personnel Ryan Pole and the Titans’ vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden and the team’s director of player personnel Monti Ossenfort.
