Every Tuesday from now until the end of the calendar year, there will be mad scrambles to grab waiver picks in fantasy leagues across the land.
But you don’t have to wait until Tuesday to get to work on that. In the vast majority of leagues, waivers/free agency opens as soon as your draft is finished. And there might be some useful players on the wire who you can add now, rather than wait to compete with the rest of your leaguemates once those players have a big week.
One of our favorite adds right now is Russell Gage. With no Julio Jones, Gage will step into the WR2 role for the Falcons. Particularly early in the season, while the team learns how to best utilize new tight end Kyle Pitts, Gage should be at least worthy of a roster spot. And if things go well, maybe a trade chip once the rise of Pitts takes it first meaningful steps.
If you have the roster room and a starter you can depend on in the first half of the season or so, Trey Lance is worth an add. We don’t expect him to overtake starter Jimmy Garappolo early in the season – Jimmy G. just isn’t bad enough to play himself out of work. But we do expect talent to win out eventually. And when Lance does get his shot, he has enormous upside.
Russell Gage APJameis Winston is often still going undrafted, and hasn’t been picked up in many leagues that drafted early. Having been named the Saints starter, we expect him to put up some good fantasy numbers fairly routinely. Though, it is Jameis Winston, so there will be some bad with the good. Figure he is top-shelf Ryan Fitzpatrick – really good or really bad. But as a platoon or bench option at the cost of virtually nothing, we’re comfortable making that acquisition.
Always pay attention to waivers, even before the season kicks off. You never know what sneaky finds might be hiding there.
