Greg Schiano has resigned as DC of the NEP.
In a move reminiscent of his now-former boss Bill Belichick, Schiano announced he was stepping down as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator, less than two months after he took the job.
“I have informed Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick that I am stepping down from my position at the Patriots,” Schiano said in a statement released by the team. “This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family. I don’t want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities.”
Schiano was replacing Brian Flores, who left to be the Dolphins’ head coach after the Patriots won Super Bowl 53 against the Rams. The former Rutgers head coach had most recently been Ohio State’s defensive coordinator for the last three years, nearly getting the head coaching job at the University of Tennessee in between before public outcry over his connection to Penn State’s sexual abuse case kept him with the Buckeyes.
It was Belichick, of course, who became head coach of the Jets for a day before resigning on a napkin in 1999. Schiano’s departure wasn’t as sudden, but now Belichick has another hole to refill on his staff.
“I respect Coach Schiano greatly and appreciate his contributions to our staff and team,” Belichick said in a statement. “He is a friend who we support completely.”
