Greg Zuerlein came to the Jets with a strong résumé and a nickname.
Jets fans weren’t calling him, “Greg the Leg,” on Sunday, though. Not after he missed a 45-yard field goal and an extra point in the Jets’ ugly 24-9 loss to the Ravens at MetLife Stadium.
They were booing the new kicker, who made a poor first impression.
“We’re missing kicks, we’re missing extra points. We’re not going to win a football game [like that],” coach Robert Saleh said. “It’s impossible to win against a veteran team when you move the ball the way we [did] and you come up empty-handed, time and time again like we did today.”
Zuerlein’s miss from 45 yards out early in the second quarter came at a bad time, with the Jets hanging with the favored Ravens and trailing by just three points. He did hit his other field-goal attempts from 45 yards late in the opening half.
Greg Zuerlein didn’t make a good first impression upon Jets fans on Sunday. Bill KostrounIronically, the kicker he replaced, Eddy Pineiro, made his lone field goal for the Panthers on Sunday, which gave them the lead late in their loss to the Browns. Pineiro was a perfect 8-for-8 with the Jets last year after replacing Matt Ammendola.
“We opened it up for competition [in the summer] and ‘Z’ beat him fair and square,” Saleh said.
The 34-year-old Zuerlein was a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in 2017 and sent the Rams to Super Bowl LIII by drilling a walk-off 57-yard field goal in overtime to cap a 4-for-4 performance in the NFC Championship game. He was cut by the Cowboys after last season for salary cap reasons.
Since losing Pro Bowler Jason Myers to the Seahawks in 2019, the Jets have been searching for an answer at kicker. Zuerlein seemed like a solution to that problem. But his debut didn’t go as planned.
