Trey Lance is apparently enthusiastic about working with Jimmy Garoppolo again following an offseason filled with rumors regarding the latter’s future whereabouts.

On Tuesday, one day after it was reported that the 49ers were bringing Garoppolo back for another year, head coach Kyle Shanahan opened up about Lance’s reaction to the surprising move, with San Francisco still planning to start Lance and keep Garoppolo as the backup.

“When I told Trey that Jimmy was going to come back it’s like, ‘Awesome,’” Shanahan said on a conference call, per NBC Sports. “‘That dude was awesome for me last year. I can’t wait to be the same way.’ Trey was great.”

Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, saw minimal playing time in his rookie season when Garoppolo, 30, served as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. This year, however, it’s the 22-year-old Lance who will be sliding into the role of QB1 after Shanahan confirmed in July they’d be moving forward with him.

Shanahan added on Tuesday that Lance actually welcomes Garoppolo’s presence.

“Trey actually likes having Jimmy in the building,” the 42-year-old coach said. “Trey was very grateful how Jimmy was to him last year and we feel very strongly from the two people, that Jimmy will give that back to Trey this year.”

Garoppolo first landed in San Francisco back in 2017, when the Patriots traded him midway through the season. Despite putting up solid numbers over the course of five seasons and leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2019 and the NFC Championship Game in 2021, the team never got star-level play out of Garoppolo, and clearly felt he was holding them back when they traded up for Lance in the 2021 draft.

Last season — which was widely speculated to be Garoppolo’s swan song in San Francisco — the quarterback threw for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

The 49ers will open the season in Chicago against the Bears on Sunday, Sept. 11.
