Darren McFadden’s dubious receiving skills really hurt him this time.

According to a coach, the Cowboys running back fractured a bone in his elbow after diving to the ground to catch his iPhone over Memorial Day weekend.

“Cracked his elbow instead of the phone,” Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown told reporters.

The injury may sideline McFadden until the start of the regular season, if not beyond. He somehow practiced through the injury for several weeks before an X-ray on Monday revealed the extent of the injury, and surgery was needed.

McFadden’s misfortune could provide an opportunity for Ohio State rookie Ezekiel Elliott to snatch away the starting job this preseason.

“It really doesn’t change much at all, honestly,” Elliott said. “It just means more reps with the first team, but you hate seeing one of your guys go down. You hate to see one of your warriors wounded. But he’s going to be around a lot.”
