Sixteen minutes in jail, then back to the NFL combine.
Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter — who was arrested on reckless driving charges stemming from the car crash that killed teammate Devin Willock and university staffer Chandler LeCroy — was back at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday after turning himself in to authorities, according to several reports.
Carter returned to Athens, Ga., on Wednesday and was booked at the Athens-Clarke County Jail on two misdemeanor charges, one for reckless driving and another for racing. He was released before midnight, just 16 minutes after his booking, on $4,000 bond.
By Thursday morning, he was back in Indianapolis, where he was tapped to “finish his interviews, measurements and other activities,” NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport tweeted.
Carter released a statement in which he said he was returning to Athens to “make certain that the complete and accurate truth is presented.
Jalen Carter returned to the NFL Combine with a grin after posting bail late Wednesday. AP“There is no question in my mind that when all of the facts are known that I will be fully exonerated of criminal wrongdoing,” the statement read.
Before the charges, Carter — who starred on Georgia’s back-to-back national championship-winning teams in 2021 and 2022 — was considered by some to be the best overall prospect in the draft, and a possible No. 1-overall pick.

It remains to be seen how far he will fall down draft boards, though, with the draft less than two months away.
“Too soon to tell,” one coach said when asked how the arrest will impact Carter’s draft status.
A longtime NFL executive said how Carter’s arrest affects his draft status will depend on the individual teams.

AP“There is a whole book already written on every prospect by scouts who have gathered info on him for two years. This latest is all part of that assessment,” the executive said. “You always do background checks through the security and legal angle, but our scouts have info that they’ve gathered and you have to assess the new information: Is this a trend or one off? Each team will then decide. The league is not involved, it’s done by each club at their level.”
Carter was scheduled to speak to reporters on Wednesday morning in Indianapolis, before news of the charges came out.
It is unclear if he plans speak to media at the combine, but some of his teammates refused to address the arrest.

Cornerback Kelee Ringo declined comment on Carter, but said of the program’s recent string of incidents: “Different people have different reasons for what they do. To be a grown man, you have to be responsible for what you are doing. Character-wise, I don’t have anything to say on any of my teammates, but to whom much is given, much is expected.”
