If this is still a competition after Monday night, it’s not a particularly close one.
Jameis Winston cemented himself as the clear leader in the Saints’ quarterback battle Monday night, putting up a near-perfect stat line against the Jaguars in their second preseason game while tossing two spectacular touchdown passes to Marquez Callaway. He finished the night completing nine of 10 passes for 123 yards and a passer rating of 157.5.
Meanwhile, Taysom Hill looked far less polished as a passer when he entered the game. His first two drives were three-and-outs, both of which ended in third down sacks. He only started to move the ball as the game moved along (against backups), finishing 11 of 20 for 138 yards.
Saints head coach Sean Payton remained non-committal on declaring a starter after the game.
“I’ll keep you posted,” Payton said, per Yahoo Sports. “I don’t have a time frame. When we know what direction we are going, we will let you guys know.”

Winston threw downfield with a level of success unmatched by even Drew Brees in his final years in New Orleans, connecting on a 43-yard touchdown bomb to Callaway on the sixth play of the game.
Two drives later, Winston identified an all-out blitz, shifted the protection and bought himself enough time to deliver another beautiful touchdown pass to Callaway.
When Hill came in, his limitations as a passer were on full display. He held on to the ball too long and displayed questionable accuracy.
Taysom Hill evades pressure against the Jaguars. Getty ImagesWinston has been a starter in the NFL for long enough to know that he’s not going to be perfect – he threw 30 interceptions in his last full season as the starter. But at the very least, this offense will be more exciting with Winston under center – for better or worse.
