Jamie Gillan was in the perfect place to celebrate the news he just received.

The punter, who is known as “The Scottish Hammer,” which is his Twitter handle, found out on Saturday he made the Cleveland Browns while drinking beers with his dad at The Flying Monkey, a local pub.

Gillan, 22, told reporters Monday he got the call from Browns GM John Dorsey that he beat out veteran Britton Colquitt while surrounded by fans who recognized him.

“As soon as I got off the phone, everybody was kind of looking at me like, ‘What was that?'” said Gillan, a former rugby player who moved to Maryland five years ago. “I just kind of said, ‘It looks like I’m playing Tennessee next week,’ and everybody just started going crazy. It was really cool.”

Gillan played for Arkansas-Pine Bluff in college and attended the Browns’ rookie minicamp after going undrafted. He quickly showed off his booming leg, and during a preseason game against the Colts, he booted a 74-yard punt. He impressed enough that the Browns were willing to move on from Colquitt, a Pro Bowl alternate last season who subsequently landed with the Vikings.

Now Gillan has a favorite watering hole he can visit when he’s craving a pint.

“You don’t have to convince me [to go back]. I like that place a lot,” Gillan said.
