Over Wendy’s fries and frosties, Giants GM Joe Schoen and his staff worked late into Tuesday evening following cutdown day around the NFL. By Wednesday, the fruits of their labor had come into focus.

The Giants picked up four players on waivers amid roster movement throughout the league, three of them at defensive back. Former Jets safety Jason Pinnock, along with Justin Layne from the Steelers and Nick McCloud from the Bills made up the trio. Jack Anderson, a guard from the Eagles, who Daboll worked with as a draft pick with the Bills, was the fourth.

A fourth signing at defensive back came later in the day, with Tony Jefferson being added to the practice squad. But Pinnock, who played 12 games for the Jets last season and earned praise from coach Robert Saleh throughout camp, is the headline name of the group.

“He’s good on [special] teams,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said. “He had some good film out there. Played in the deep part of the field. We practiced against him, played against him [in the preseason]. He has some redeeming qualities and traits that when the guys watched him in the scouting department and coaches, thought he’d be a good claim.”

Daboll later named Pinnock’s speed and size — 6-foot, 205 pounds — as qualities the Giants liked.

The Giants also moved three players to injured reserve: left guard Shane Lemieux, edge rusher Elerson Smith and cornerback Rodarius Williams. Once the dust settles, those three spots will end up being used for three of the four waiver claims.

Of that list, the presence of Lemieux, who has been working back from a foot injury, opens the door to some questions. Though it would have been surprising to see him play in the opener against the Titans, the Giants will now need to come up with a stopgap solution at left guard for at least four weeks.

“We’re worried about today’s practice,” Daboll said, when asked who would start in Tennessee. “Getting better today.”

Asked who would be competing for the role, he would only say: “Let’s see until we finalize the roster. I’ll give you a better answer [then].”

It stands to reason that Josh Ezeudu, Ben Bredeson and perhaps even Anderson would be on the list of candidates. The Giants, though, have dealt with a slew of injuries along the line during camp, and this is a blow.

Daboll described both Kayvon Thibodeaux (MCL) and Azeez Ojulari (calf) as day-to-day.

Linebacker Austin Calitro, offensive lineman Max Garcia, tight end Tanner Hudson and defensive lineman Nick Williams were released as part of the roster reshuffle, though they could be re-signed after players are added to injured reserve.

Quarterback Davis Webb was back with the practice squad a day after being cut. Wide receiver C.J. Board and linebacker Quincy Roche were also among the notable practice squad signings.

Leonard Williams had a brace on his left arm while speaking to the media, saying it was an issue he had been battling for all of camp, though he doesn’t expect it to be affect his Week 1 availability.
