A fifth candidate for the open Jets general manager position emerged Wednesday.

The team has requested permission to interview Saints director of pro scouting Terry Fontenot, according to the NFL Network. Fontenot joins Joe Douglas, Champ Kelly, Scott Fitterer and George Paton as the known candidates the Jets have requested permission to speak with.

Interviews are expected to begin later this week. The Jets are looking to replace Mike Maccagnan, who was fired May 15 after four years on the job.

Fontenot has spent 16 years with the Saints, the last six as the director of pro scouting. According to the Saints website, “His responsibilities in managing the pro personnel department include recommending player acquisitions by evaluating players from all professional leagues, including the Saints roster, monitoring the waiver wire and supervising the advance scouting of upcoming opponents.”

Fontenot has not worked with Jets coach/interim GM Adam Gase before. Douglas and Kelly are the only candidates who have previous working experience with Gase. Douglas, the Eagles’ VP of player personnel, is considered the favorite to land the job by many around the NFL.
