The Jets have a new backup quarterback for Sam Darnold.

The team and free agent Trevor Siemian agreed to a deal, his agent announced on Twitter. A source said it is a one-year, $2 million deal with a maximum value of $3 million.

Siemian, 27, was with the Vikings last season, but never got into a game. He spent the previous three seasons with the Broncos, the team that drafted him in the seventh round in 2015. He went 13-11 as a starter in Denver. He has 30 career touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

The Jets are moving on from Josh McCown, who backed up Darnold last year. McCown remains undecided whether he wants to play in 2019 or retire. The Jets have not closed the door on a McCown return, but they could not wait around for him to make a decision. McCown was a valuable mentor for Darnold during his rookie season and his presence in the locker room will be missed.

Siemian took over in 2016 for a retired Peyton Manning as the starter in Denver. He went 8-6 in 14 starts, completing 59.5 percent of his passes for 3,401 yards, with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

In 2017, Siemian made 10 starts, splitting time with Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler. He completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,285 yards with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The Jets also have former Giants draft pick Davis Webb on the roster, but they wanted an experienced backup behind Darnold. Webb has yet to appear in an NFL game and will enter the spring as the team’s No. 3 quarterback.

There were not a lot of great options in free agency for a veteran backup. Blake Bortles signed with the Rams this week, and the other top quarterbacks available are Osweiler, Robert Griffin III and Sam Bradford. Siemian reportedly attracted attention from other teams, including the Vikings, who wanted him back.

Darnold missed three games in his rookie season with a sprained foot and the Jets lost all three with McCown as the starter.
