Ben Roethlisberger won’t be playing Sunday when the Steelers visit the Jets, but one of his former wide receivers said a quarterback who reminds him of the two-time Super Bowl champ will be.

“Sam [Darnold] reminds me a lot of Ben Roethlisberger,” Jets offensive assistant coach Hines Ward said Friday. “You just want to see his progression grow as a quarterback. He’s done that. From Week 1 to where he is now, you see tons of improvement. The potential is there.”

Ward caught passes from Roethlisberger for eight seasons before retiring in 2012. This year, he is helping out the Jets receivers who are catching passes from Darnold, who is coming to the end of an up-and-down sophomore season.

“I know our receivers, we get excited,” Ward said. “I tell those guys, ‘Hey, most teams in this league don’t have good quarterbacks. So when you see one, you find one, appreciate him. Try to get as much time in with him to work on route running after practice, get some extra catches in.’

“Because Sam’s going to be great. He’s going to be a good one.”

Jamal Adams (ankle), Quinnen Williams (neck) and Robby Anderson (illness) were all limited in practice Friday but are all expected to play.

With Adams having missed the past two games, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has had to control the safety’s excitement in practice this week.

“I’m almost having to [say], ‘Hey, we’re not playing yet, it’s Sunday, it’s Sunday,’ ” Williams said. “He’s been practicing that way, very active and he can’t wait to get out there.”

DL Henry Anderson (shoulder), OL Kelvin Beachum (ankles), DB Arthur Maulet (calf), DL Steve McLendon (knee/hip), DB Brian Poole (concussion/ankle) and RB Bilal Powell (ankle) were also limited and listed as questionable.

WR Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) and OL Tom Compton (calf) did not practice and are doubtful.

Either Brent Qvale or Conor McDermott could replace Compton at right guard, and would be the 10th different offensive lineman to start a game this season for the Jets.

Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster practiced fully Friday and is expected to play Sunday for the first time since Week 11.
