ORLANDO, Fla. — The NFL owners plan on discussing the national anthem protests and how to handle them going forward this week at the league meetings.
Jets CEO and chairman Christopher Johnson is opposed to trying to legislate the players out of protesting.
“I have some pretty strong feelings about that,” Johnson said. “I don’t approve of changing the current status. I know there’s some discussion of keeping players off the field until after the anthem. I think that that’s a particularly bad idea.”
Johnson felt the Jets came together as an organization after the anthem issue got heated in September. He spoke with the players and would link arms with them during the anthem before every game. He also got involved with the players’ coalition and their efforts to promote social change.
There is not expected to be any action taken this week on the anthem issue, but there will be discussion about it. Johnson made it clear how he feels.
“I can’t speak to how other people run their teams,” Johnson said. “I just think that trying to forcibly get the players to shut up is a fantastically bad idea.”
