The Jets released little-used running back Michael Carter on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Carter, who was drafted in the fourth round in 2021 and quickly became one of the heartbeats of the team’s locker room, has seen his playing time diminish significantly since his rookie year.

Though he still was playing as the Jets’ primary third-down back, Carter had only 38 rushing yards on eight carries and 15 receptions for 68 yards in nine games this season.

In all, Carter has been in on 142 offensive snaps and 11 on special teams.

His final snap came on the opening drive of the second half Sunday night when he was called for a chop block on a third-and-8, wiping out a first down.

He did not play the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, the signing of Dalvin Cook complicated things, with Cook, a perennial 1,000-yard rusher, barely getting any carries — and expressing his displeasure with his role.

Breece Hall is the team’s unquestioned top back and he gets most of the touches, which he should as one of the most talented skill-position players on the roster.

Hall has rushed for 521 yards and two TDs in nine games this season and has 26 receptions for 246 yards and one TD — the last time the Jets reached the end zone.

After a productive rookie season, Carter’s production has declined in each season since.

When he gained 964 yards from scrimmage in his rookie season, Carter looked like a steal in the fourth round.

He had 639 rushing yards and 325 more receiving.

Last season, he rushed for 402 yards and three TDs in 16 games and caught 41 passes for 288 yards.

This season, Cook was added to be the No. 2 behind Hall and Brooklyn native Israel Abanikanda was drafted in the fifth round, but has spent most of the season on the inactive list on game days.

The release of Carter presumably makes way for Abanikanda to get some live reps. Abanikanda showed some promise in preseason, averaging 4.5 yards per carry and scoring a TD.

The Jets’ running game ranks 31st in rushing attempts at 198 through the first 10 weeks of the season.
