If Jets draft pick Kenrick Ellis is convicted of the felony charge he is facing in Virginia, the native of Jamaica could face deportation, ESPN.com reports.

Ellis recently had his trial date moved to late November for a felony malicious wounding charge.

“A potential complication is that Ellis is not a U.S. citizen,” the website reports. “Ellis, a native of Jamaica who moved to Florida at the age of 11, has ‘permanent resident’ status. A permanent resident convicted of an aggravated felony is deportable, according to immigration law.”

Ellis, a defensive tackle from Hampton, was selected by the Jets in the third round of April’s NFL Draft. He is expected to compete for time at nose tackle.

“Because of the enormous stakes, Ellis’ best move is to negotiate a plea bargain before he gets to court, according to three immigration lawyers contacted by (the website),” the report says. “That, they agreed, is the likely outcome.”

The charges stem from an April altercation at the Virginia university.

The Jets and Ellis’ lawyer did not comment to the website.
