Jets Draft Preview: OL
BY BRIAN COSTELLO
In the days leading up to the NFL Draft on April 25, we will examine the draft position-by-position through the eyes of the Jets . Today we take a look at offensive line. Coming Monday: defensive line.
Losses from last year:
None
Who’s on the roster:
Nick Mangold – The Pro Bowl center is only getting better.
Alan Faneca – The veteran guard showed some holes in his pass blocking during his first year with the Jets. He still is a solid run blocker and is a leader in the locker room.
Brandon Moore – He almost departed over the winter but the Jets gave him a new contract and he’s back. He might be the team’s best all-around lineman.
D’Brickashaw Ferguson – The 2006 first-round pick made strides last season. The Jets hope that continues this year.
Damien Woody – Made an impact in his first season with the Jets, lining up at right tackle. He’s a great locker room presence, too.
The backups – We’ll tackle this as a group. Robert Turner, Wayne Hunter and Stanley Daniels are the only other linemen on the roster. That’s a thin group, and if any of the starters go down for an extended period of time it will be a problem.
Best in the draft:
Jason Smith – He has great feet and will be long gone by the time the Jets pick.
Eugene Moore – A great pass blocker who followed in Ferguson’s footsteps at Virginia. Will go in the Top 10.
Andre Smith – His erratic behavior in the offseason has hurt his stock but his talent is still great enough for someone to draft him early.
Late round sleepers:
Augustus Parrish – Teams are concerned about the level of competition he faced at Kent State. He played tackle in college but will be a guard in the NFL. He is athletic and big enough (300 pounds) for someone to take a second-day chance on him.
Jason Watkins – Had some strength issues at the combine that will drop him. He was a two-year starter for the Gators and was honorable mention All-SEC last year.
The Post Plan:
The Jets are thinner than Kate Moss at offensive line. They need to address this next weekend without a doubt. The question is where does it fall on the priority list.
I think it ranks below the needs at receiver, tight end, the defensive line and maybe quarterback. The Jets should wait until the late rounds to draft a lineman and then mine the undrafted free agents for some more depth.
