See you in … October.
Two days after saying quarterback Zach Wilson could possibly start Sunday against the Ravens, Jets coach Robert Saleh announced that Wilson will likely miss the first three games as he recovers from the knee injury he suffered in the preseason. The Jets do not expect Wilson to return until their Oct. 2 game against the Steelers.
“The earliest he’s going to be available is Pittsburgh,” Saleh said. “That’s going to be the earliest just from everything we gathered over the last couple of days. Now, can that change? I’m always going to leave that door open. You guys know me. I’m the eternal optimist. But we are going to make sure that both mind and body are 110 percent and do right by him and we feel like talking to the doctors and everyone, it’s going to be that Pittsburgh week.”
The Jets never put a timeline on Wilson’s injury, but sources initially said they expected Wilson to miss two to four weeks. It has been three weeks since his surgery. The Jets always insisted they would wait until Wilson was 100 percent before playing him. Saleh created some optimism on Monday when he said it was a possibility that Wilson could play against the Ravens. But it seems like that was just gamesmanship to keep the Ravens guessing about who would start. Saleh said Wilson did not suffer a setback.

Joe Flacco will start Sunday against the Ravens with Wilson out. Saleh said the Jets did not place Wilson on injured reserve because they want him to be able to practice as soon as he is healthy enough. Players on IR are out for at least four weeks.
Saleh said the Jets decided to keep Wilson out after meeting with the doctors Tuesday night.

Bill Kostroun/New York Post“After all the information gathering, it’s not worth the risk,” Saleh said. “In terms of getting him out there and just making sure there’s the knee element, there’s the mind element, there’s the practice element. There’s a whole lot of other things other than the knee. He hasn’t had a setback. He looks fantastic. He looks good. He feels good.”
Wilson said he is able to throw and drop back but he is just starting to run. He won’t practice this week.
Wilson was injured against the Eagles when he scrambled out of the pocket and decided to cut inside to get extra yards. Both Saleh and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said he should have just run out of bounds. But Wilson does not sound like he will be changing his approach.
“I don’t think I’ll play any differently,” Wilson said. “People will say you should have gone out of bounds or you should have slid, but it was a non-contact injury. The guy didn’t tackle me. If the guy hit me and I got injured, that’s one thing. If I can’t even run and cut without getting hurt, what am I doing?”
Wilson suffered an injury to the same knee last season that cost him four games. He also had injuries in college at BYU. Still, Saleh said he does not consider his quarterback injury-prone.
“Injuries are bad luck,” Saleh said. “Some things happen where you just get bad luck. He just needs a string of good luck. It will come eventually. It always balances itself out.”
Wilson said if it was up to him, he would try to play this week.
“It’s frustrating, of course,” Wilson said. “You want to be healthy as much as possible. When the injury happened, I was pissed at myself, preseason game and all that kind of stuff. You’ve got to be able to stay healthy.”
