The Jets mostly have avoided holding joint practices with opposing NFL teams in recent years, doing it just once since 2005.
First-year head coach Robert Saleh believes the Jets’ first joint sessions since working out with Washington in 2018 will be “valuable” for his team, and especially for his rookie quarterback, Zach Wilson.
The Jets will share a field with reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Packers at their practice facility in Green Bay on Wednesday and Thursday before the teams square off in Week 2 of the preseason Saturday afternoon at Lambeau Field. The Jets also will host the Eagles for two practices next week in Florham Park ahead of the preseason finale between the clubs Aug. 27 at MetLife Stadium.
“I think we can get a lot out of it. It’s an opportunity to compete against a championship roster,” Saleh said Tuesday before the Jets departed for Wisconsin. “Obviously, a new set of plays, scheme, both offensively, defensively, and even special teams.

If you go in there with the right intent to compete and not look at it like it’s a free-for-all where you’re trying to do extra. I think they’re just valuable.”
The previous time the Jets held joint practices, with Washington in Richmond, Va., three summers ago, two brawls broke out between the teams, including one that spilled into an area of fans.
“They know, but it’s also something we talk about. … This isn’t street ball,” Saleh said. “We’re going out there, we’re going to compete. We’re going to work our techniques, our fundamentals. Just like we do against each other.
“We’re going to respect our opponent, we’re going to respect what they’re trying to get done, also. We’re going to do everything we can to get better. We’re anticipating a good, clean, week of competition.”
That mutual respect dates back to when Saleh and Packers head coach Matt LaFleur served together as graduate assistants at Central Michigan in 2004. LaFleur’s younger brother, Mike, worked alongside Saleh on the coaching staff with the 49ers and was hired to be the new Jets coach’s first offensive coordinator.

“I think [that relationship] helps. We’ve had a lot of discussion to make sure we’re both getting the work that we need. … There’s not as much guard up with regards to communication and protecting, if you will. Just a good collaboration to make sure that we’re both getting the work in that we need to get the most out of this practice.”
Saleh’s defense should receive a stern test from the highly efficient Green Bay offense, which led the league in scoring last season. The 22-year-old Wilson, who said earlier this month that he’s “always been a Rodgers guy,” also should benefit from the opportunity to watch the two-time league MVP work in person.
“You can learn a lot. This is an organization and offense that’s Year 3 in their system now. They’re efficient, they’re fast, obviously a Hall of Fame quarterback in Aaron Rodgers,” Saleh said. “We’re going to see a scheme that is on point with regards to efficiency.
“So we’re going to be challenged in terms of precision and the value of it is to see how precise these great offenses can be. It’s going to be a tremendous valuable lesson for everybody, not just the defense.”
Aaron Rodgers Patrick McDermott/Getty ImagesStarting guard Greg Van Roten, who played the first two years of his career with the Packers, believes the joint practices will serve as “a good tool … to break up the monotony” of training camp.
“You’re going against the same defense every day. It’s your guys, the drills can get a little tedious,” Van Roten said. “It’s a good test for our entire team to see how we stack up with one of the better teams in the league.”
