The Jets’ quarterback room got awfully crowded recently and the team finally got rid of one.

The team cut Bryce Petty, who was their fourth-round pick in 2015, the team announced Thursday. The move was not surprising after the Jets drafted Sam Darnold last week. That gave them five quarterbacks on the roster along with Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Hackenberg. Petty was the odd man out.

Petty went 1-6 as a starter with the Jets. He saw action in 10 games, starting seven. He completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 1,353 yards with four touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

The 26-year-old first started toward the end of the 2016 season. He won a game against the 49ers in San Francisco, but did not win again. He suffered a shoulder injury in Week 16 that finished his year. The Jets gave him a chance to start again at the end of 2017 after McCown broke his left hand, but Petty lost all three of his starts and only threw one touchdown on the season.

It will be interesting to see if the former Baylor star gets another chance with a different team. He had a very productive college career but there were questions about how he would transition to the NFL.

Petty is just the second draft pick by Mike Maccagnan that the team has released over his three-plus years as general manager.
