The latest turmoil to strike the Jets’ offensive line only means one thing for versatile George Fant.
Duane Brown’s shoulder injury will necessitate Fant switching back to left tackle yet again for the season opener Sunday against the Ravens, with rookie Max Mitchell getting his first career start at right tackle. Jets head coach Robert Saleh described Fant as the ultimate team player, but the constant switching clearly hasn’t been ideal.
“Man, obviously frustrated still. Second time in a row that I’ve had to move the week of the game. I can’t control it, but it’s obviously a frustrating situation,” Fant said after practice Friday in Florham Park. “I just want to get comfortable and play a position and I haven’t been afforded that since I’ve been here.
“It’s almost impossible to really prepare like you want to. Yeah, I’ve played both positions, but it’s still the situation of preparing and understanding how you need to play against certain players on certain sides. I’m just taking the time I can to do it right now.”
Duane Brown talks with Jets reporters on Aug. 16, 2022. Bill Kostroun/New York PostBrown, the five-time Pro Bowler who was signed in August after Mekhi Becton suffered a season-ending fractured kneecap early in training camp, also will miss at least the opener. Saleh said “there’s a possibility” the 37-year-old Brown will land on injured reserve, which would sideline him for at least the first four games of the season.
The Jets also will be without starting quarterback Zach Wilson for at least the first three games due to the right-knee injury he suffered during the preseason.
Brown, whose two-year contract worth $20 million contains $9 million in guaranteed money, had missed just four of 65 games with Seattle over the previous four seasons before suffering the injury Monday in practice.
Max Mitchell at Jets practice on Aug. 9, 2022. Bill Kostroun/New York Post“Duane has been very healthy his entire career. He takes amazing care of his body,” Saleh said. “And it’s unfortunate, it’s a football injury.”
Fant played so well last year in Becton’s absence that the organization’s original plan coming into training camp was for Becton to come back at right tackle. Fant was switched from the left to the right side upon Brown’s arrival after Becton went down again last month.
“I’m sure it’s frustrating for George because, everybody just wants to settle on their job,” Saleh said. “But credit to George, he is an uber-athlete. He’s got great versatility. His whole career, he’s always been a team guy first. He’s a phenomenal teammate.
“For him to sacrifice to jump left, right, left, right is not easy for him. But at the same time, he’s so gifted and so athletic and smart enough to be able to do that. … So he’s making it very easy for this transition.”
Fant also had been limited in practice earlier this week with a knee issue, but the six-year NFL veteran said he is “good to go” against the Ravens and “confident” in Mitchell stepping in and playing well
“One thing I can say if you’re on an NFL roster, whether you’re practice squad or not, you’re one play away,” Saleh said of Mitchell, the Jets’ fourth-round pick out of Louisiana. “I’ve said it before, Max is much further along than we thought he’d be at this point.
“We’re very confident that he’ll be able to step in and do his job. We think his acceleration is going to go even faster, because there’s nothing like getting reps in the NFL and getting baptized early in your career. So we have a lot of faith in him.”
Mitchell played with the Jets’ starting unit during part of the first preseason game against the Eagles, and he faced veteran defensive lineman Fletcher Cox and linebacker Haason Reddick. Now, he will go up against six-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Calais Campbell, who has 93.5 career sacks.
“Obviously he’s a renowned guy, but another dude. It’s definitely a challenge, but I’m prepared for it,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been taking reps with the ones, so I was ready for it. Personally, I expect myself to be ready to go out there and play.”
