The Jets might be starting yet another combination along the offensive line before the season ends.
If left guard Alex Lewis is unable to play Sunday against the Bills because of an ankle injury, the Jets will employ their ninth different O-line unit in 16 games.
“I don’t think it’s ever been this many,” Jets coach Adam Gase said before Thursday’s practice. “It’s the continuity part, it’s kind of tough, but these guys, I thought last week [against the Steelers], was a good example. Conner [McDermott] got thrown in there, did a good job against a pretty good defense.
“If we gotta move some pieces around again this week, then it is what it is. I think those guys have handled it well, but it makes it tough whether it’s the running game or protections and everybody being on the same page.”
The offensive line figures to be an area of need for GM Joe Douglas to address in the offseason, both via the draft and in free agency.
With guard Tom Compton also sitting out practice with a calf injury, veteran Brent Qvale could receive his first start of the year. He would become the 11th offensive linemen to start at least one game this season for the Jets.
“At the end of the day, that stuff happens. You gotta jell regardless,” said right tackle Brandon Shell. “I feel like we’ve been together for a while now, all of the linemen, so we have to trust each other. We have the guys to get the job done. We’ve had a lot of injuries, but at the end of the day, we still have to go out there and play a game. It’s not like you can cancel the game because we have guys hurt.”
