A day after Aaron Rodgers indicated on Tuesday he wouldn’t play again this season, Jets head coach Robert Saleh confirmed it.
“No, he’s not playing [this year],” Saleh said Wednesday.
There had been hope that Rodgers would return from the torn Achilles he suffered just four plays into the season for Sunday’s game against Washington, but that was based on the expectation the Jets would still be alive for the playoffs.
That possibility ended with Sunday’s loss to Miami and the quarterback said on his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he “had no timetable to come back” this season.
Rodgers was activated by Wednesday’s deadline, but that’s only to allow him to practice, which Saleh said was part of his rehab from the injury and was possible because of flexibility the team has with its roster due to other injuries.
Rodgers won’t be active for games.
Asked about Rodgers’ attempt to make it back in 2023 despite the long odds, Saleh said, “I know he went hard at it. The optimist in me says, just observing him, he tried everything he could to come back and who knows if the circumstances were different [and] if we got a couple of these wins, maybe we’re having a different conversation. But I know he gave everything he could.”
Jets coach Robert Saleh says Aaron Rodgers will not play again this season. Bill Kostroun for the NY PostRodgers also noted on Tuesday that he wasn’t yet 100 percent healthy, which also played a role in the decision to not play again this season, in addition to their 5-9 record and playoff elimination.
“My instinct says if he was 100 percent [healthy], he’d probably be banging the door a little bit more,” Saleh said.
Saleh, like Rodgers did Tuesday, also looked ahead to their future together.

“We want to win a championship and we believe we can win a championship,” Saleh said. “I know he said [he’d play] two years, but in a perfect situation, we win a championship next year and he walks off in the [sunset]. I think he’s gonna play until the wheels fall off. I don’t think it’s one or two [years]. I think it’s three, four or five, if he can. That’s just my opinion.”
And he remains optimistic about what lies ahead, citing a “healthy Rodgers [and] a healthy [offensive] line, we’ll get that thing fixed, too.”
“The excitement of August 2023 was real,” Saleh said of Rodgers’ first preseason as a Jet. “The excitement of everyone coming out of the tunnel [at MetLife Stadium] on Sept. 11 was real. It’s unfortunate the way the season panned out. We’ll have that excitement again. The expectation for me, and I speak for everyone here, is that we’ll win.”
Randall Cobb, one of several ex-Packers the Jets signed on Rodgers’ recommendation, said the Jets didn’t win enough games to get Rodgers back, but he’s confident the quarterback will play at a high level when he does return.
“He worked his ass off to give himself the opportunity for us,” Cobb said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough for him to come back and play. But he’ll be back. We know how hard he works and I see the sparkle in his eyes when he’s out there, whether he’s throwing the ball or with the scout team, playing around. He loves this game and being around guys.”
To make room for Rodgers on the 53-man roster, the Jets waived fullback Nick Bawden. Bawden appeared in all 14 games for the Jets this season and had one rushing touchdown.
