The Jets are hoping that running back Le’Veon Bell will be able to play Sunday against the Giants even though he is sitting out Wednesday’s practice.

Bell has an ankle/knee injury, according to coach Adam Gase, but there is no structural damage.

“He was trying to practice [Wednesday],” Gase said. “We were discouraging that. We thought it would not be the right thing for him to do to go out and practice. He was finally like, ‘Yeah, you’re right. I probably should stay inside.’ I think he’s going to be alright. He’s just really sore right now.”

The injury occurred near the end of the loss to the Dolphins when Bell got his leg twisted on a run. Bell stayed in the game and even broke off a few good runs.

“He didn’t say anything,” Gase said. “It was like Monday morning when he came in real sore.”

On an another injury front, tight end Chris Herndon was expected to practice fully Wednesday for the first time this season. Herndon has missed all eight games this year, the last four with a hamstring injury.

“It’s going to be all about how he feels [Wednesday], open it up and just go,” Gase said. “I think that him being dressed this week and going through pregame, I think that helped him. I think he felt better when he did that. We’ll see how it goes.”

Herndon was dressed for Sunday’s game in Miami, but did not play. Gase said he thinks Herndon benefitted from going through pregame warm-ups.

“It’s kind of just one of those things. He’s trying to work through it,” Gase said. “He’s trying to fight through that stage of, ‘what’s going to happen when I really go?’ I know he’s been trying to do that on the side when he’s running and things like that, non-football stuff. I think he’s doing that. It’s just about having the confidence to do it within the play.”

LT Kelvin Beachum (ankle) was a limited participant in practice, but it sounds like there is a good chance he will play after missing the last three games. … The Jets claimed CB Maurice Canady off waivers from the Ravens and placed S Rontez Miles on season-ending injured reserve. Miles has been dealing with neck and hip injuries. … C Ryan Kalil (knee) did not practice. … DE Henry Anderson (shoulder), LB Neville Hewitt (neck/knee), LB Jordan Jenkins (calf), NT Steve McLendon (neck), CB Darryl Roberts (calf), WR Demaryius Thomas (hamstring) and RG Brian Winters (knee/shoulder) were all limited.
