CORTLAND — Hours after it was revealed that Jets management met with Darrelle Revis’ agents on Friday and Revis’ representatives delivered a contract proposal, Jets owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum on Monday sounded highly pessimistic the two sides will come to an agreement.
“I’m under the impression that there was no progress,’’ Johnson said after the team’s afternoon special teams practice. “The way it was characterized to me by Mike is to me there’s movement. Nothing new and different, as they say in marketing.’’
Asked if he’s optimistic a deal will eventually get done and Revis will rejoin the team, Johnson glumly said, “The answer is no.’’
“Based on the meeting Mike had last Friday, that’s the conclusion,’’ Johnson said. “That’s my feeling right this morning, as of right now I would say no.’’
Revis’ agents met with Tannenbaum on Friday at the Roscoe Diner in Roscoe.
“We met with Mike T and we gave them a written proposal and asked him to give it to (owner Woody) Johnson and we are waiting for their response,” Neil Schwartz told The Post earlier Monday.
In an interesting twist, HBO’s “Hard Knocks” asked Schwartz if it could be at the diner meeting and he declined.
Rex Ryan is clearly annoyed with the absence of Revis, who held out of training camp for the ninth day. But it seems Ryan is even more tired of being asked about Revis and his contract dispute.
“We’re going to prepare like he’s not going to be here,” Ryan said. “If he comes through the door, that’s fine. Somebody will kiss him on the lips, probably. But the guys that are here, those are the guys we’re getting ready for the season.”
The next pressure-point day comes Tuesday, because by NFL rule if a holdout doesn’t report by Aug. 10 he doesn’t get credit for 2010 as an accrued season. That means Revis, who has three years remaining on his deal, would have to wait another year before he qualifies for free agency.
Don’t expect Tuesday’s deadline to rush Revis into camp; he’s been too committed to getting a new contract to let that alter his plans. He is being fined more than $16,500 for each day he misses.
Ryan said last week Revis could come in the day before the first regular-season game and start. The coach changed his stance on that slightly, claiming he was talking “facetiously.”
The Jets used rookie cornerback Kyle Wilson with the starters in a scrimmage Saturday night and he was in with them again today.
Ryan said Dwight Lowery unselfishly told defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman that Wilson should work with the starters to get the reps.

Rex Ryan and DT Kris Jenkins raved about the progress Vernon Gholston has been making working at DE.
Ryan called keeping Gholston at LB last year “a coaches’ mistake.’’
“I think this is the best camp that he’s had since he’s been here,’’ Jenkins said of Gholston. “He’s picking his motor up and he’s definitely working harder. I think he’s getting comfortable with the plays.
“I’m starting to realize what Vernon’s issues have been: Vernon’s issue is when he’s not really comfortable in the defensive scheme he gets a little tentative. Now he’s starting to relax and have confidence in what’s going on and he’s starting to crank his motor up and it’s about time.’’
Ryan was equally impressed.
“That’s the best day he’s had since I’ve been here,” Ryan said of today’s practice.. “I want to see him string some together. This is the most excited I’ve ever been about Vernon Gholston. Whatever he had for breakfast, he needs to eat (more). That was big time.
“I thought it would happen last year,” Ryan went on. “But it was a coaching mistake. We put him now in a role where he can be more successful quicker. This is more of a natural role for him.”

Backup QB Mark Brunell worked as the holder for Nick Folk on FGs, but he’s being viewed as insurance for P Steve Weatherford, according to Ryan. Brunell held for the Saints last year.

WR David Clowney, who’d been excused the last couple of days for personal reasons, returned to practice today and made an acrobatic TD catch of a Mark Sanchez heave into the end zone with several DBs blanketing him.

LB Jason Taylor left practice with what Ryan said was a “slight” groin pull. WR Braylon Edwards (sore knee) also was limited. TE Jeff Cumberland (concussion) and FB Jason Davis (knee) sat out practice. … Matt Slauson continued to work with the first team at left guard and seems to be the odds-on favorites to win the starting job.
