Grading the Jets’ 24-9 season-opening loss to Ravens at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Offense

After all the offseason talk about the Jets additions, this was the final product? The offense put up nine points and made countless mistakes. They piled up some yards, but they were largely meaningless. The offensive line could not protect Joe Flacco and he was sacked three times and hit 11. Flacco (37 of 59, 307 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 74.6 rating) was not good but he received very little help. The wide receivers could not get open and had several key drops. TE Tyler Conklin’s fumble on third down ended up turning a first down into a fourth down. A bad day all around.

Grade: F

Defense

The offense definitely gets more blame for this loss but the defense gave up a few huge plays that killed the Jets. They largely played well against Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (17 of 30, 213 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 6 rushes, 17 yards), but Jackson killed them with touchdown passes of 55 and 25 yards. The Ravens only had 63 rushing yards and had to punt six times. Safety Lamarcus Joyner had a killer pass interference penalty that set up Baltimore’s first touchdown.

Grade: C+

Special Teams

New year, new kicker, same problems. New kicker Greg Zuerlein had a rough debut with the team. He missed a 45-yard field goal and an extra point. He did have one FG from 45 yards. Punter Braden Mann had 20-yard punt that handed the Ravens the ball in Jets territory and they scored a touchdown a few plays later. They also had a penalty on special teams, which was a problem all of last year.

Grade: F

Coaching

The defensive game plan was strong and they did a good job of limiting Jackson and the running game. The touchdowns given up were not schematic issues, but execution. On offense, Mike LaFleur did not have a good day. He did not seem to have any answers when things were going slowly. The team needed a spark and he did not provide one through play-calling. Robert Saleh’s team made way too many mistakes in this game, something that reflects poorly on its preparation.

Grade: D
