Grading the Jets after their 29-15 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
Offense
The offensive line is putrid. It allowed eight sacks and got no push in the running game (46 yards rushing). QB Sam Darnold (21 of 30, 218 yards, 2 TDs, 3 INTs, 73.3 rating) was running for his life and looks like he is regressing. They had two good drives and the rest were duds. This offense is awful.
Grade: F
Defense
The defense had done well this year not allowing big plays … until Sunday. The Jaguars gashed it for plays of 70 and 66 yards. Jaguars rookie QB Gardner Minshew (22 of 34, 279 yards, 3 TDS, 119.6 rating, 8 rushes, 28 yards) sliced the Jets up. After allowing the 66-yard run by Leonard Fournette on the second play, the Jets played better against him (10 more yards). Jaguars wide receivers were wide open all day.
Grade: F
Special Teams
The punt coverage unit had a terrible day. The Jaguars muffed two punts that the Jets failed to recover and Dede Westbrook returned a punt 24 yards in the second quarter. The kickoff return team had a penalty on the first return of the game. At least the Jets did not miss any kicks.
Grade: D
Coaching
Last week’s unsightly performance was somewhat understandable because of the opponent. The Jaguars are not very good and they toyed with the Jets. Adam Gase needs to get this fixed fast. Outside of two drives, the offense looked like it could not function. This was Gregg Williams’ worst day with the Jets. If the Jaguars had executed better in the red zone, the score would have been worse.
