CORTLAND – Jets coach Rex Ryan has said the team could use Geno Smith as a change-of-pace quarterback even if he does not win the starting job.

The idea would be to use Smith in a similar fashion to how the 49ers used Colin Kaepernick early last year before he took over a starting role. Smith has shown impressive speed already in training camp, running through Ryan’s defense.

How does he feel if the team asks him to do designed runs?

“I’m pretty comfortable with it,” Smith said. “Like I’ve said all along, I prepare myself to do whatever it takes to help this team. If I have to run or I have to pass, I’m going to be up for it and I’m going to be prepared.”

Smith may accept a running role, but he made it clear he is a passer, too.

“I hate the label people try to put on quarterbacks,” Smith said. “I think I do what it takes to win games whether it’s run or pass.”
