DENVER — This Jets win had some extra Sauce.

Rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner had another standout performance in the team’s 16-9 win over the Broncos. Gardner had 10 tackles and three passes defensed, including breaking up a fourth-down pass to the end zone in the fourth quarter that could have tied the game.

“He’s ready for this,” fellow cornerback D.J. Reed said. “If we didn’t go by rookies and second, third, fourth, fifth year, you wouldn’t be able to tell he’s a rookie out there. He’s playing like a savvy veteran that’s been in the league for multiple years. He’s elite, man.”

With 2:36 left in the game and the Jets holding a 16-9 lead, the Broncos faced a fourth-and-3 at the Jets’ 25. Broncos quarterback Brett Rypien threw to Courtland Sutton in the end zone, but Gardner broke the pass up and the Jets got the ball back.

“I knew my teammates were counting on me when the ball was in the air,” Gardner said. “I just had to step up and make a play.”

Gardner nearly had an interception in the end zone early in the game, but it appeared that Sutton grabbed his arm to prevent him from catching the ball. Gardner said quarterbacks will keep throwing at him until he starts intercepting the ball. He has one interception this season.

“I think they’re going to keep trying me every week until I come down with one,” Gardner said. “I had a freebie early in the game, the receiver was grabbing me. I was frustrated. That was probably going to be the freest pick of the season, but I had to move on to the next play.”

Jets coach Robert Saleh said RT Alijah Vera-Tucker (elbow) and WR Corey Davis (knee) will undergo more tests Monday to determine the extent of their injuries. Davis said he does not believe his injury is serious.

What did QB Zach Wilson say in the huddle after the team lost Vera-Tucker, Davis and Breece Hall to injuries?

“I said, ‘Listen, take advantage of this opportunity. Step up. Grow a pair,’ ” Wilson said. “I think that’s what I said. I don’t know if I should be telling you guys that, but I think the guys got the message.”

It appeared that LB C.J. Mosley intercepted Rypien with 42 seconds left in the game, but it was overturned after a review. Mosley insisted after the game that he did pick the ball off.

“Oh, 100 percent,” Mosley said. “I thought I got my hands under it. I gave the ball to my mom, so I’m counting it.’’

WR Denzel Mims was active for the first time this season and he threw a critical block on Hall’s 62-yard touchdown run. Mims, who requested a trade this summer, said he is leaving all of that to his agent right now.

“All I want to do is continue to win football games and play,” Mims said. “As long as we’re winning, I’m happy. There’s no point in complaining right now.”

Mims had one catch for 4 yards on two targets.

Hero

Jets running back Breece Hall. He didn’t last until halftime, knocked out of the game with a knee injury in the second quarter. But it was Hall who gave the Jets their only touchdown of the day — on his 62-yard run. He finished with 72 yards on four carries.

Zero

Brett Rypien. The Broncos quarterback threw a killer interception to safety Lamarcus Joyner that led to a key Jets field goal in the third quarter. He completed 24 of 46 passes for 225 yards and an interception and was uneven for most of the game.

Unsung hero

Zach Wilson. The Jets quarterback was anything but sharp, but he didn’t turn the ball over for the third consecutive week and made just enough plays in the passing game to get his team over the line. He finished with pedestrian stats — 16 of 26 for 121 yards — and ran for 24 yards on four carries.

Key stat

11 Penalties the Jets committed for 85 yards.

Quote of the day

“We have a little bit of dog in us. From top to bottom, one to 99, coaching staff, everybody. It’s really nice to be able to go get a win, especially after the way they beat us last year (26-0). [That was] kind of embarrassing.”

— Jets running back Michael Carter
