FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Just when you think the Jets can’t sink any lower, they find a way.
The Jets lost to the dismal Patriots on Sunday at Gillette Stadium, 25-22, giving up a last-minute touchdown to suffer their fifth straight loss and fall to 2-6, putting their season on life support before Halloween even arrives.
After a week filled with happy talk about postgame speeches and the best practices ever, the Jets left with the same result as last week and the week before … and the week before … and the two weeks before that.

The switch in offensive play-caller has led to nothing.
The trade for Davante Adams … nada.
The debut of Haason Reddick on Sunday … zilch.
“This is a moment of darkness, and we understand that the outside world is going to get really loud right now,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “But the only thing I know in life is that when it gets dark and it gets hard, that you work and you point the finger at yourself and you look inward and you figure out what can I do better from an individual standpoint.
“If we do that collectively, which I believe we will, that’s your only opportunity to dig yourself out of this. That’s your only opportunity to improve and fix some of these wrongs.”
The Jets looked like they would pull this one out. They took a 22-17 lead with three minutes left in the game, but the Patriots put together a game-winning drive that would make Tom Brady proud.
Quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who was playing in place of injured rookie Drake Maye, orchestrated a 12-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Rhamondre Stevenson scoring on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 22 seconds left in the game.

“I’ve been in the darkness,” Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. “You’ve got to go in there, make peace with it.”
On the game-winning drive, Brissett scrambled for 14 yards on one third down and then threw a 34-yard pass to Kayshon Boutte, who beat Sauce Gardner, to move the ball to the Jets 9-yard line.
The Jets stopped them for three plays before Stevenson plunged in from the 1. The Jets’ vaunted defense came up small again.

We say that’s not who we are, but it’s who we are until we demonstrate otherwise.”
The Patriots snapped a six-game losing streak and are 2-6 just like the Jets, tied at the bottom of the AFC East.
This was ugly all-around for the spiraling Jets.
They somehow burned three timeouts in the first quarter, struggled to move the ball for much of the game, had plenty of missed tackles, two delay of games penalties and a few special teams gaffes to round things out.
They needed a 10-play, 70-yard touchdown drive to regain the lead in the fourth quarter. Trailing 17-16, Rodgers went 3-for-3 for 42 yards on the drive and Breece Hall had 26 yards rushing.
Braelon Allen scored a three-yard touchdown to give the Jets a 22-17 lead. The Jets went for two, but took a delay of game penalty and then Rodgers’ pass to Mike Williams came up short.

Rodgers was sacked on third down and lost eight yards, making the kick harder for the struggling kicker.
“The NFL is hard,” Rodgers said. “It’s hard to win. Harder when you make it difficult on yourself. Offensively we can’t worry about what else happens. We’ve got to be efficient. We’ve got to make the most of the opportunities. Again, there was yards left out there, opportunities left out there. Can’t leave it up to — we’ve got to score touchdowns. Can’t leave it up to Greg or try and pin it on Greg. We had a lot of opportunities to score 30, to make it a two-score game at times and didn’t do it.”
After Zuerlein’s missed field goal, the Patriots went 61 yards on 14 plays and Joey Slye kicked a 23-yard field goal to give the Patriots a 17-16 lead.
New England had some success early, highlighted by Maye opening up the scoring with a 17-yard scramble for a touchdown. But Maye sustained a concussion and left the game in the second quarter.
The reeling Jets now have three days to prepare for Thursday night’s game against the Texans at MetLife Stadium.
The Jets will continue to search for answers for what’s gone wrong but they are running out of time to find them.
“I’m pissed,” Ulbrich said. “They’re pissed. I’m hurt. They’re hurt. We are not executing in critical moments, especially down the stretch right there. We had opportunities to win this game, should have won this game, and we didn’t. So give credit to the Patriots; they took advantage of a team that didn’t execute as well as they can.”
