The Jets are really playing tackle football.

For the second straight year, the team selected an offensive tackle with its first-round pick, taking Missouri tackle Armand Membou with the No. 7 overall pick Thursday night.

Membou can slide in at right tackle, one of the team’s biggest roster holes, and play opposite left tackle Olu Fashanu, the team’s first-round pick in 2024.

“He really fits us,” Jets first-year coach Aaron Glenn said. “The athletic profile is off the charts. He’s mean, he’s nasty, he’s tough. What we’re trying to do on offense, he really fits what we’re trying to do. It was a no-brainer. Once the pick was there for us, it was like, ‘This is the guy.’ ”

Membou, 21, was a three-year starter at right tackle at Missouri.

He was not highly rated entering last season but he had a strong junior season, allowing either no sacks or one sack, depending on which service you believe.

He declared for the draft and then had a monster NFL Scouting Combine that included a 4.91 40-yard dash, a blazing time for a 332-pound man.

The Jets had a formal interview with Membou at the combine and then had him in for a “top-30” visit in Florham Park.

As they got to know Membou, they loved his attitude. Glenn said he reminds him of Lions tackle Penei Sewell, who is one of the best right tackles in the NFL.

“The mentality and the demeanor of the player is exactly the same,” Glenn said of the Sewell comparison. “That’s what attracted me to that player, first and foremost, and then you start seeing athletically how he moves and that attracts you. Then, when you get a chance to talk to the player and get to know exactly who he is as a person, then that attracts you, also. It was like a perfect storm on that guy being a Jet.”

The Jets and Membou had several FaceTime calls this week, and Membou said he got the feeling he was going to be a Jet.

He seemed to like Glenn, who he called a “cool-ass dude.” Membou gives the Jets an offensive line with five starters in their 20s and four who were drafted in the first two rounds by the team.

The Jets’ only hole on the line was at right tackle after Morgan Moses left in free agency for the Patriots.

“I’d say they’re getting a mauler, for sure,” Membou said. “A mauler in the run game and in pass [protection], just someone very consistent. I’m going to make sure to keep my quarterback clean.”

Membou was the second offensive tackle taken in the first round.

The Patriots selected LSU’s Will Campbell at No. 4 overall. The Jets had to choose between Membou and Penn State tight end Tyler Warren at No. 7. But they said the decision was easy.

Glenn cited his previous two coaching stops with the Saints and Lions, where they used high picks on the offensive line and it became a strength of the team.

“I’m a firm believer that you start it inside out,” Glenn said. “If we can build our line, just as much our defensive line also, that only helps you as a team. It helps your quarterback. It helps your running backs. It helps your passing game. It just creates an identity within your team that you’re trying to make sure every team, when they watch film, they see that.”

Membou is aware he is joining a group with high expectations to protect new quarterback Justin Fields and open holes in the run game.

“I think the Jets O-line has a good, young foundation,” Membou said. “I feel like adding me to it and the work I’m going to put into this organization, we could be very good up front in the trenches.”

There were reports the Jets were talking to teams about possibly trading RB Breece Hall, but general manager Darren Mougey said that is not the case.

“I haven’t had any talks with any teams about Breece Hall,” Mougey said. “He’s on the team.”

Glenn was asked if he had a response to former quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ criticism of him on “The Pat McAfee Show” last week.

“Absolutely,” Glenn said with a smile. “Membou’s a really good player and I’m so excited he’s a Jet.”
