Despite the pleas from Jets fans, the team is sticking with Joe Flacco as its starting quarterback Sunday against the Browns.
Flacco, who is filling in for the injured Zach Wilson, had a tough game last Sunday against the Ravens in a 24-9 loss. Fans chanted for backup Mike White during the game and there have been calls to start White this week on social media and talk radio.
But Jets coach Robert Saleh said the team never truly considered making a change.
“There was no serious need to make a change with Joe,” Saleh said. “It’s one game. We played a really good defense. I know the quarterback gets a lot of the brunt. He gets celebrated and all the negativity too — the positives and the negatives. There are a lot of things that we as a team could’ve done to help him out a lot during the game, too. We’ll give it another run, and I think Joe will be a lot better.”
Flacco threw a whopping 59 passes in the loss, completing 37 for 307 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Flacco was under siege for much of the day. He was sacked three times and hit 11 times. His receivers also dropped the ball and failed to get open on many plays.
“When you look back at the game, when he had a clean pocket, he was very, very efficient,” Saleh said. “There was more than just him. There’s the O-line, there’s route running, there’s dropped passes, fumbles that stalled drives. There’s just a comedy of errors that lead to what looked like a bad performance by him. Now, it wasn’t the best performance, but I think it wasn’t as bad as people think it was.”

“No, Joe is our quarterback,” Saleh said.
Saleh had fun when responding to Peyton Manning’s comments on ESPN on Monday mocking the Jets for having Flacco throw 59 times.
“Peyton, I’m taking your receipt. I’m kidding,” Saleh said with a laugh.
Wilson returned to practice for the first time since his knee injury in the preseason opener against Philadelphia. Wilson did not participate in team drills, but did quarterback drills and threw to receivers without a defense on the field. Wilson could return for Week 4 against the Steelers.
The Jets have some injuries to deal with. Safety Jordan Whitehead (ankle) did not practice Wednesday and Saleh said he is questionable to play Sunday. The team signed Will Parks off the practice squad and he could play in Whitehead’s place. Punter Braden Mann is battling back stiffness, which popped up during the Ravens game. The Jets signed Ty Long to the practice squad in case Mann can’t play. DE John Franklin Myers (toe) and LT George Fant (rest day) also did not practice. WR Braxton Berrios (heel) was limited.
