The Jets’ plan at left tackle came into focus quickly Saturday.
Just hours after D’Brickashaw Ferguson made his retirement official with a farewell letter posted on social media, Gang Green landed his replacement by acquiring four-time Pro Bowl pick Ryan Clady from the Broncos.
The Jets sent a fifth-round pick in this month’s NFL Draft to Denver for Clady and a seventh-round selection this year in what amounted to a low-risk, high-reward scenario in light of Clady’s recent injury history.
Clady, a first-round pick by the Broncos in 2008, has missed a combined 30 games over the past three years and is coming off a torn ACL last summer that forced him to miss Denver’s entire 2015 run to the Super Bowl.
Clady was scheduled to make $9.5 million this year, which would have been unworkable for the Jets with their current salary-cap woes, but a source said he restructured his deal to make the trade happen.
Clady became expendable when the Broncos signed former Seahawks left tackle Russell Okung in free agency last month.
Denver, which gets enough cap relief in the deal to make a stronger run at Colin Kaepernick, was expected to cut Clady until the Jets came calling last week when it became apparent to the team that Ferguson planned to retire instead of taking a pay cut.
