One of the Jets free agency targets came off the board Thursday. Safety Brandon Meriweather will sign with the Redskins, according to a source.

Meriweather had planned on visiting the Jets Thursday but opted to sign with the Redskins after visiting Washington on Wednesday. Meriweather played last season for the Bears after spending four years with the Patriots. New England selected him in the first round of the 2007 Draft.

Bengals free agent Reggie Nelson will visit the Jets on Friday, and the team is believed to be interested in Redskins free agent LaRon Landry.

Eric Smith is the only safety on the Jets roster at the moment who played a significant role last year. Brodney Pool is leaving the Jets as a free agent. He reportedly agreed to a deal with the Cowboys Thursday. Jim Leonhard is a free agent and is not expected to return.
