So, you’re saying there’s a chance.

Jets coach Robert Saleh left the door open a crack on Monday that quarterback Zach Wilson will be able to return from knee surgery in time to play Sunday’s season opener against the Ravens at MetLife Stadium.

“It’s possible,” Saleh said.

So is winning the lottery, and it feels like the odds of Wilson playing Sunday remain remote.

Saleh said Wilson went through a workout Monday morning and the Jets would monitor how his surgically repaired right knee responds before announcing Wednesday who the starter will be against the Ravens.

Backup Joe Flacco has been preparing to start against his old team since Wilson injured his knee in a preseason game against the Eagles on Aug. 12. Wilson suffered a torn meniscus and bone bruise in the right knee after he scrambled for some extra yards. He underwent surgery on the meniscus on Aug. 16 and the initial belief was that Wilson would miss two to four weeks. Tuesday is three weeks from when he underwent surgery.

Wilson has been a spectator at practice over the last few weeks, but Saleh said he was able to do some work on the side Monday, including some throwing.

“We put Zach through a workout today,” Saleh said. “He looked good, felt good. We’re going to see how the knee responds today and tomorrow and we’ll have an answer for everybody on Wednesday.”

This likely is just gamesmanship on the part of Saleh. There is no reason to give the Ravens an extra two days to know for certain who the starting quarterback will be.

This season was largely supposed to be about whether Wilson could make a leap in Year 2 after the Jets drafted him No. 2-overall in 2021. He was having an up-and-down training camp and threw an interception on his first preseason series before injuring his knee on the second series.

The injury caused Wilson to miss the final three weeks of training camp and the last two preseason games. Last year when Wilson injured his knee, the Jets brought him back slowly. He had two weeks of at least partial practice before they put him into a game. It sounds like this year the Jets won’t take as long to get him back into game action.

“Eventually he’s got to get back in there whether it’s this week, next week, the week after, it doesn’t matter. You just have to rip the Band-Aid off,” Saleh said. “When Zach’s ready to play and he’s healthy, like I’ve said from the beginning when he’s healthy and he feels good, he’s going to play football.”

Saleh said deciding between Wilson and Flacco does not affect their preparation this week for Baltimore.

“It does nothing for us from a game-plan standpoint,” Saleh said. “All three of our quarterbacks are capable of running our offense at a high level. For [offensive coordinator] Mike [LaFleur] and all of [the coaches], they’ll be able to game plan the way they need to.”

Flacco had a strong training camp but threw a bad interception against the Giants in his only preseason action of the summer. Flacco has lost 14 of his last 16 starts, dating back to 2018 when he was still with the Ravens.

Flacco acknowledged this summer that there would be some added emotion for him going against Baltimore, the team that drafted him and where he played for 11 years, including one Super Bowl season. If Wilson is ruled out, as expected, Flacco facing his old team will be one of the storylines of the week.
