The Jets did not make many shocking cuts on Tuesday, but they did make a surprising trade.

The team shipped disappointing tight end Chris Herndon to the Vikings along with a 2022 sixth-round pick in exchange for Minnesota’s 2022 fourth-round pick, according to a source.

The move came just before teams had to trim their rosters to 53 players.

Herndon was not the only move the Jets made at tight end. They also cut veterans Ryan Griffin and Daniel Brown, and rookie Kenny Yeboah, leaving them with just two tight ends on the active roster — Tyler Kroft and Trevon Wesco (who is also a fullback).

That means they surely will be active on the tight end market Wednesday. They are No. 2 in waiver claim order behind the Jaguars. Teams will be awarded players off waivers on Wednesday afternoon. The Jets can also move players to injured reserve after 4 p.m. Wednesday, and those players are eligible to return in three weeks.

Though the Jets made some interesting cuts, the most interesting move was the Herndon trade.

They drafted Herndon out of Miami with a fourth-round pick in 2018, and he had a strong rookie season, catching 39 passes for 502 yards and four touchdowns. It led to big expectations for him that he never fulfilled.

He missed all but one game in 2019 due to a suspension and injuries. Herndon, 25, returned in 2020 but had a problem with drops and seemed to lose confidence. He caught 31 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns. He dropped four passes and had two fumbles.

He had fallen behind Kroft on the depth chart in recent months and had a quiet training camp and preseason.

The Jets are also down to just two quarterbacks. The team cut veteran Josh Johnson and James Morgan, a fourth-round pick in 2020. That leaves rookie Zach Wilson with Mike White as his only backup.

General manager Joe Douglas continues to reshape the roster. Of the 53 players on the initial roster, just 11 were acquired by his predecessor, Mike Maccagnan.

Speaking of Maccagnan, the Herndon trade is the latest blemish on his drafting record. The Jets now have just two players left from the six-player 2018 draft class — Nathan Shepherd and Folorunso Fatukasi. Sam Darnold, Herndon, Parry Nickerson and Trenton Cannon are all gone.

In addition, the Jets now have just three players on their roster from the 2015-18 drafts after selecting 28 players over that period.

The Jets kept seven wide receivers, including Jeff Smith, who was not expected to make it.

A few other mildly surprising cuts were DE Ronnie Blair, a favorite of coach Robert Saleh, and LB Noah Dawkins, who started the preseason game in Green Bay.

There is a chance both could be back with the team after players are moved to the IR. Jarrad Davis, Jabari Zuniga, Conor McDermott, Chuma Edoga and Ashtyn Davis are all candidates for IR with the opportunity to return in three weeks. Many players also will be brought back as part of the 16-player practice squad.

The Jets also moved DE Kyle Phillips to the reserve/PUP list, meaning he is out for at least six weeks.

Here are all of the players the Jets cut on Tuesday: RB Josh Adams, DE Ronnie Blair, TE Dan Brown, CB Elijah Campbell, LB Noah Dawkins, LB Milo Eifler, TE Ryan Griffin, OL Grant Hermanns, QB Josh Johnson, WR D.J. Montgomery, OL David Moore, QB James Morgan, OL Jimmy Murray, S Sharrod Neasman, LB Del’Shawn Phillips, DL Hamilcar Rashed, DL Tanzel Smart, WR Vyncint Smith, OL Isaiah Williams and TE Kenny Yeboah.
