Trader Joe strikes again.
Jets general manager Joe Douglas pulled off a trade Monday night for running back James Robinson, sending a conditional draft pick to the Jaguars in exchange for the back, according to a source. The move came a day after the Jets lost rookie running back Breece Hall for the season to a torn ACL.
Douglas sent a message that the Jets believe they are in going places this season after starting 5-2. Instead of rolling with the players on the roster, Douglas brought Robinson in to team with Michael Carter in the backfield.
The Jets will send a 2023 sixth-round pick to the Jaguars, which will become a fifth-rounder if Robinson rushes for 600 yards this season, according to ESPN. Robinson already has 340 yards.
The Jets traded for James Robinson after Breece Hall’s season-ending ACL injury.
The Jets are riding a four-game winning streak and they have been doing it largely with great defense and a strong running game. The Jets have not thrown a touchdown pass in any of their last three games.
Hall was the team’s leading rusher and his injury is a huge blow, but the Jets hope Robinson, Carter and Ty Johnson can continue to keep the ground game rolling.
Robinson rushed for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns as an undrafted rookie in 2020. He had 1,414 yards from scrimmage that season, the most by an undrafted rookie in NFL history.
Robinson became expendable after being passed on the depth chart by Travis Etienne recently. Robinson did not have a carry or a reception in Sunday’s game against the Giants. He played just 12 snaps.
The 24-year-old Robinson is in the final year of his contract and will be a restricted free agent in 2023, meaning the Jets can hold onto him if they like what they see over the final 10 games of this season.
Robinson suffered a torn left Achilles tendon last year in Week 16 against the Jets. He had 767 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns before he went down with the injury. Robinson made it back for the start of this season and had a rushing and receiving touchdown in the Jaguars’ Week 1 loss to the Commanders.
