An inside look at Sunday’s Jets-Saints Week 14 matchup at MetLife Stadium:
Marquee matchup
Jets QB Zach Wilson vs. Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen
Wilson is coming off the strongest game of his rookie year. He led three touchdown drives to start the game and looked more comfortable than he has all year. Things stalled in the second half, but the game was still a step forward. Allen is a veteran coach who oversees a defense that is 14th in yards allowed (346.5) and 19th in scoring (23.0). Allen surely will have some tricks ready for Wilson, who said he feels like he is no longer a rookie after returning from injury two weeks ago.
“I think the cool thing about my situation is I’m kind of looking at this like this is my second year,” Wilson said. “Kind of like I already played a first season. I took some games off because of injury and now I feel like that excitement, the energy to want to play and finish this season is 100 percent there for me just because I feel like I learned so many things and I worked to improve on them and now I got to show them in the game. Now I feel like I’m two games in to a new season. I feel like the five I got to take very seriously as far as just working to improve every single day.”

There is no logic behind this one, just a gut feeling. I think the Jets have one more shocker left this season and they will get it against a Saints team searching for a post-Drew Brees identity. Zach Wilson has a big game and the Jets pull off the upset in convincing fashion.
Jets 31, Saints 17
Four downs
The return of Demario: The Jets will be reminded of one of their biggest recent personnel blunders on Sunday, with Demario Davis in the middle of the Saints defense. The Jets drafted Davis in the third round of the 2012 draft. They let him leave as a free agent in 2016 before bringing him back in a trade with the Browns in 2017. Davis had a monster year for the Jets and was a team leader, but they let him leave in free agency again. He signed a three-year, $24 million deal with New Orleans and is now an All-Pro linebacker and the heart and soul of the Saints team.
“He is an unbelievable football player,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said, “and from my understanding he was an unbelievable character guy here, too, and he was a tremendous leader, a model citizen as it pertains to what you want out of the linebacker position. I’ve never had a chance to work with him, but he’s a part of a lot of teach-tapes that we have for our guys.”
Running on empty: The Jets are thin at running back and wide receiver. At running back, Michael Carter is on injured reserve with an ankle injury and is not eligible to return until next week. Now, Tevin Coleman is going to miss Sunday’s game with a concussion. That leaves Austin Walter, Ty Johnson and La’Mical Perine as the Jets’ backs.
At wide receiver, Corey Davis had season-ending core muscle surgery on Tuesday and Elijah Moore, who has been the team’s most explosive offensive weapon, was placed on injured reserve Saturday with a quad injury. The Jets will lean on Jamison Crowder, Keelan Cole, Denzel Mims and Braxton Berrios.
Off and running: The Jets gave up 185 yards rushing to the Eagles last week, their latest defensive stumble. The Saints are getting Alvin Kamara back from a knee injury and he surely will find some holes in the Jets defense, which is dead last in the NFL in yards and points allowed and 30th against the run.
“You have to eliminate some part of an offense and try to make them as one dimensional as you can,” Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said. “We have not done that well enough by any means. There are games where we’ve played the run well, there’s spots within games we played the run well, but just consistently as you really look at the season as a whole, not defending it as well as we need to, to be successful.”
Hill to climb: Taysom Hill will get his second start at quarterback for the Saints. He was intercepted four times last week against the Cowboys and injured the middle finger on his throwing hand. He is expected to have a splint on the finger for Sunday’s game. Hill ran for 101 yards in the loss to Dallas and the Jets’ defense knows he can kill them with his legs even more than with his arm.
Hill is converting from a do-it-all weapon for New Orleans into a true quarterback and recently signed an interesting contract extension reflecting his unique status as a multi-dimensional player.
